What We Do
Environmental Impact
Since our inception, the work of the BRRAlliance has revolved around the integration of our communities with the natural environment for both beautification and sustenance.
Our community gardens allow us to feed our neighbors and they act as important community gathering places. We grow and educate together with our neighbors who are our most important asset, and help feed our food desert communities by producing over 800 pounds of fresh produce every year.
We continue to work on environmentally sensitive projects as part of the natural evolution of our programs and goals. Through our environmental speaker series, the garden patch newsletter, and other past, present and future initiatives we have provided education and awareness on critically relevant environmental topics.
Our work on a community wide habitat project guided us to lead the City of Buffalo to become a National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habitat, expand that certification to all of Erie County, and we are now working to support Niagara County in obtaining its NWF Commnity Wildlife Habitat certification, because nature knows no borders so we can’t either.
We focus even more on the environment by continuing the work of educating people about how our region sits on bird and butterfly migration paths and contains RAMSAR designated wetlands, and why these natural resources must be protected.
In 2023 we officially opened the Black Rock Harbor Center, and are in the process of making it a base of operations for other nonprofits.
At the end of 2022, we debuted updates to Market Square Park, and are continuing our plans to make this historic location a cornerstone and gathering place of the community, as well as a platform by which outsiders who might not otherwise see the wonderful things about the Black Rock and Riverside communities are introduced to the places where we live and work.
Economic Impact
The Black Rock Business Association and Buffalo Main Street initiatives help our business communities grow and prosper. Our community’s voice is important and should be heard, and our economic role is vital to the city’s vibrancy and health.
New grants and partnerships with major projects such as Niagara Street redevelopment assure our community voices are heard and needs are met. We continue to grow our relationship with important city, county, state, and business partners to make sure we are present when decisions are made relevant to our communities.
We continue to create partnerships that will bring jobs into the community by introducing more non-traditional career paths to students and adults. This will form the basis of future economic growth and jobs for our community.
Quality of Life
From running the Northwest Buffalo Tour of Gardens, to working alongside the neighbors in one of our community gardens, to distributing and planting sunflowers as part of our 1000 Sunflower Project that has grown into our Native Tree and Seed Bank, much of the work of the BRRAlliance revolves around the integration of the urban and natural environments for the beautification and sustenance of our community. Nature does not end at the edge of the city limits, and the future of urban living isn’t flat sheets of lifeless concrete, but sustainable integration of plant and animal life as part of city living.
By holding holiday events, the Really Really Free Markets, and community events using Market Square Park as a platform, we seek to bolster community interaction, support community unity, and build connections between the Black Rock and Riverside neighborhoods and those who live outside of our community. We understand these connections are important for weaving together the social networks that will allow the communities we serve to grow and prosper into the future.
