2024 Urban Treks Challenge

Back by popular demand, the City of Buffalo’s biggest urban hiking challenge!

Welcome to the 3nd Annual Western New York Urban Treks Challenge brought to you by Outside Chronicles and the Black Rock Riverside Alliance. This challenge was created to get people out on our urban trails during our beautiful Buffalo summers.

The Western New York Urban Treks Challenge is designed to give people an opportunity to visit some of well-known and little-known urban parks. Along with hiking the trails, the trail material will educate participants on parks history and local flora and fauna to spot along the trail.

Single-participant registrations are $20, registration of a family of up to four individuals is $45.  Visit the Urban Treks website to learn more and sign up to take the challenge!

Scajaquada Full Circle Speaker Series

Thank you so much to everyone who attended the Scajaquada Full Circle Speaker Series!  It was our pleasure to join forces with the Black Rock Historical Society and Scajaquada Corridor Coalition to bring this series to you!

This series was sponsored by the generosity of the Baird Foundation, City of Buffalo Common Councilor Joseph Golombek and the ECEMC.

A Message From our President

Greetings from the Black Rock Riverside Alliance Board of Directors!

It has been a little while since our neighbors heard from me so I thought I would check in with an update on some of our progress during 2023.

Over the past several months, the BRRA has been fast at work getting our new headquarters, the Black Rock Harbor Center, up to its “fully armed and operational” status. We have tenants, including key partnerships with like-minded nonprofits, and are actively running programming and community events from our very own space. These efforts run in tandem with our curation of the other community spaces under our charge, including regular events at Market Square Park and the maintenance of our beloved community gardens.

In terms of programming, the Alliance successfully recertified Erie County and the City of Buffalo as NWF Wildlife Habitats, as part of our ongoing support of the Habitat Project. We also continue to support Niagara County and other neighboring counties in their certification efforts. Efforts to implement our most recent Main Street Grant revitalization initiative are in full swing and should wrap up this summer. In the meantime, we had time to hold an outrageously fun meat raffle, participated in the Give716 event for 7/16 Day, and are planning the Second Annual River Rock Run in the fall.

If you are interested in getting involved please let us know. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers at every level, especially more community volunteers to help maintain the gardens and particularly engaged (or vocal) stakeholders at the Board Committee and Board of Directors level. Your help is greatly needed and appreciated!”
