Time to Plant is Here!

The four neighborhood gardens are ready for planting after today. Plants that come from the Grassroots Garden Group are coming in today and will need to be planted at the gardens. A new gardening program from the Black Rock Riverside Garden Group is starting Thursday, May 24th. The “Farmer in the Garden” series is starting with “The Farmer” Ignacio Villa at the Farmer Garden (Farmer and Guernsey Streets). The Farmer will be in the gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 – 7 PM, rain or shine. He will offer planting, pruning, weeding, watering, and spacing advice, along with mulching and composting methods for locals who want to enhance their home gardens and their harvests using natural resources. The schedule continues with Tues., May 30th at the Ontario Street garden, Thurs., June 1 at the Esser Street garden, and Tues, June 6 at the Dearborn Street Garden. The schedule will continue rotating in this manor through June. A full list of dates and times is posted here, or on Facebook at Black Rock Riverside Community Garden Group. Folks are encouraged to adopt one of the 4 neighborhood gardens as their community garden and get themselves into the nurturing process that will lead to harvesting the resulting produce. Contact Evelyn at 830-9817 for more information on this and other great summertime activities in Black Rock and Riverside.
